I came across the Henge Dock a few months ago while reading through the US version of MacWorld. When I enquired through a friend of mine based in NY, he said that they were unable to source any as Henge Dock themselves, were out of stock.
At this time I thought it was either a very good or bad sign, very popular vs crap production.
It looks like I shouldn’t have worried as the orders have been flying in and the products are now available internationally.
Reading through my monthly edition of MacUser (UK) via the Zinio for iPad , I saw an advert for the Henge Dock through a website called Protronica.
Now, this is where I start to have an issue.
I have the MacBook Pro 15″ and being able to doc it at work would be amazing… so amazing that I’m prepared to part with my own hard earned cash and pay for it.
That is until I saw how much they’re charging for it in the UK….£61.44 plus postage: £4.25 (over night). That’s a grand total of £65.69 for what is essentially a moulded piece of plastic.
Now, let’s see here. If I were to purchase it directly from the US ($69.95 = £43.68 (thanks xe.com) ) it’s a LOT cheaper.
The only downside to ordering it from the US is that the postages is about $35 and then you’ll probably need to pay import duties as well. This adds up to $105 (roughly £65).
Seeing as Protronica seem to be acting a European distribution point, they would bulk import a load of these and help reduce the cost. To be honest Amazon are also selling it, and they’re charging just over £67.
Anyway, I digress!! …. At the end of the day it looks like a great product.
Why Apple haven’t designed a MacBook docking station, is beyond me. They’ve created a product for the Enterprise but then forget about the number one peripherals.
After all my bitching and moaning… I’ll probably still order one, come payday
